What Is Infrared Communication?

What Is Infrared Communication?

Infrared communication is a wireless method of sending information between devices using infrared light. Unlike Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, it usually requires the devices to be close together and have a clear path between them.

You may have seen infrared technology in TV remote controls. When you press a button, the remote sends an infrared signal to the television, telling it what action to perform.

How Does Infrared Communication Work?

Infrared communication uses an infrared transmitter to send signals and a receiver to detect them. The transmitter converts information into infrared light, while the receiving device reads the signal and responds to it.

For example, when you increase the volume with a TV remote, the remote sends a specific infrared signal to the TV. The TV receives and interprets that signal.

Where Is Infrared Communication Used?

Infrared technology is commonly used in:

  • TV and AC remote controls
  • Some sensors
  • Short-range device communication
  • Security and monitoring systems
  • Industrial equipment

Infrared vs. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

Infrared communication is different from Bluetooth and Wi-Fi because it generally needs a direct path between the transmitter and receiver. Bluetooth can connect nearby devices without requiring direct alignment, while Wi-Fi is mainly designed for wireless network and internet connections.

In simple words, infrared communication uses invisible infrared light to send information between nearby devices.
